This module provides students with the opportunity to improve their ability to use English accurately, appropriately and fluently, particularly in the written form.  With the particular strengths and weaknesses of Hong Kong students of English in mind, the course reviews the major grammatical forms and structures, while dealing selectively with the grammatical and structural aspects causing most difficulty.

College Algebra

This module is for students with algebra skills to S5 level.  The first part of the course is a review of basic algebra, equations and inequalities.  An in-depth study of important elementary functions (polynomial, rational, exponential and logarithmic) and how to plot and use their graphs follows the review.

Logic & Nature

This module is a general historical introduction to the early Greek philosophy of logos and nature. For the Greek, logos mean account or explanation as well as that which is given as account or explanation, whereas nature means the all or the whole of being and changing in and for itself. Thus, the course will, for the most part, trace the formation and evolution of philosophical thought on the natural aspect of being, the intellectual power of soul and the explanatory function of language from the very beginning of philosophy up to Plato and Aristotle. Towards the end of the course, the relevance of the ancient Greek philosophy to the contemporary thought will be illustrated.

Interpersonal Skills & Service Orientation

Worklife generally, and in the services and business management fields particularly, revolve around being able to communicate and manage people effectively.  The interpersonal skills module aims to develop students’ capability in managing psychological and behavioral interaction with people with a view to promoting work efficiency and a co-operative working environment.  It also looks at the relevance of interpersonal skills to career orientation towards the four services management options: finance, retail, travel and tourism and aviation.

English II Integrated Skills in ESL

This module is an integrated course in a wide range of language skills, building on the previous separate focuses on writing and presentation in English I and English II.  It is designed to give students guidelines to accurate structure, while at the same time involving students in frequent writing practice and development of their spoken presentation skills.  Students will also be expected to use ICT to demonstrate their learning.

This is an introductory module which provides students with basic statistical techniques and their application which have applicability within the later business, management and economics modules in their services management program.  The area covered includes descriptive statistics, probability, sampling concepts and hypothesis testing.

World Civilization to 1648

The module offers a survey and comparison of major civilizations from antiquity to the early modern age, a period of roughly 5,000 years.  The study is limited to key features and developments in significant human communities that flourished at different times in various regions of the world.  It requires students to think like historians.  The study of history is the study of human perceptions, ideas and activities.  The object of historical study is to increase understanding of the variation, capability and potential of human thought and behavior.  The study is designed to teach students to use historical evidence to develop and support reasoned interpretations and opinions.

The module presents the key functions of airport operations which include airport terminal operations, ground handling, baggage handling, special passenger handling, airport security and handling emergencies.

English III Speech with Communication Technology

This module focuses on students' listening and speaking skills.  It emphasizes the structured preparation (language and format) of spoken presentations and careful listening and response through critique of others' formal presentations.  Students are required to undertake group self-study to develop skills in visual and aural ICT support for their presentations (deliberated formatting of PowerPoint, incorporation of video-clips, photographs and printed texts such as extracts from newspapers and magazines etc).

Physical Concepts is an introductory course in physics intended for students not majoring in a science field.  The approach is primarily conceptual with sufficient simple mathematics included to illustrate the quantitative side of physics.  The main applications are to the physics in the everyday world with attention also given to the historical development of both classical and modern physics.

The module introduces students to the nature and function of geographical knowledge in the context of increasing globalization.  It looks at the consequences of converging systems across the globe, identifies the factors which create, maintain and destroy diversity and stresses the exceptional impact of the phenomenon of globalization.  It also provides students with a solid basic understanding of the geographically associated aspects of the major regions of the world.

Principles of Finance is an introductory course into the world of finance. This module provides an introduction to the major religious traditions of the world, including the various Indian, Chinese, Buddhist and Islamic traditions.  It sets these religions in their historical context, presents aspects of religious thought enshrined in the relevant religious texts and examines these as spiritual responses to the human condition.

This elective module is particularly intended for students wishing to prepare themselves for further study through the medium of English, especially in overseas venues.  It seeks to take students with a solid foundation in English through the previous study of English I-IV and prepares them to reach an IELTS equivalent level of 5.0-5.5 or beyond in the four language skills. The units also teach students to apply these language capacities effectively in the real academic contexts of their current program.

With customers' expectations growing rapidly as the tourism industry expands with increasing affluence and leisure time, more and more emphasis is necessarily being placed on the promotion of quality customer service.  This module explores the principles and practices of good customer service relevant to the hospitality and tourism industry, thereby allow student to understand and apply the strategies for good customer service in their profession.

Professional work contexts involve a variety of issues and problems where the professionals are required to make decisions and display effective leadership skills.  Some decisions can be made for the individual's own operations, others may affect a whole team, involving consensus-seeking and leadership skills. The course introduces students to the process of decision-making and the use of logical argument. It also looks at the leadership skills and the role of the leader in balancing needs and interests of team members and securing co-operation, highlighting the planning role of leaders, particularly in changing or unsettled environments.

Team building and co-operation are integral to both work and life generally.  It is important to learn how to maximize the productivity and effectiveness of people of varied attributes (culture, beliefs, socio-economic background, nationality, race, gender etc) when they work together in teams.  The module aims to introduce the concepts of effective team-work and how to co-operate to achieve a common goal. It also incorporates an internship phase which allows students to experience and experiment with the concepts in the practical workplace, to reflect upon their relevance and applicability to the specific context and to test the waters of real professional experience.

Other aspects treated include marketing research, efficient promotional strategies, marketing communication plans and the various distribution channels.  Approaches to ticketing will also be examined in some depth.
