English 1: Writing with Grammar

This module provides students with the opportunity to improve their ability to useEnglish accurately, appropriately and fluently, particularly in the written form. With the particular strengths and weaknesses of Hong Kong students of English in mind,the course reviews the major grammatical forms and structures, while dealing selectively with the grammatical and structural aspects causing most difficulty.

English II: Integrated Skills in ESL and ICT

This module is an integrated course in a wide range of language skills, building on the previous separate focuses on writing. It is designed to give students guidelines to accurate structure, while at the same time involving students in frequent writing practice and development of their spoken presentation skills. Students will also be expected to use ICT to demonstrate their learning.

Maths I

The course focuses on basic linear algebra and calculus. It will cover not only the basic derivatives and integration techniques with one and more than one variable, but also some basic linear algebra. Students will gain a mastery of the common and necessary manipulations of calculus and matrices.

Logic and Nature

This module is a general historical introduction to the early Greek philosophy of logos and nature. For the Greeks, logos means account or explanation as well as that which is given as account or explanation, whereas nature means the all or the whole of being and changing in and for itself. Thus, the course will, for the most part, trace the formation and evolution of philosophical thought on the natural aspect of being, the intellectual power of soul and the explanatory function of language from the very beginning of philosophy up to Plato and Aristotle. Towards the end of the course, the relevance of the ancient Greek philosophy to contemporary thought will be illustrated

Phonetics and Phonology

This module provides Chinese speakers learning English with the opportunity to improve their ability to hear and record visually unknown, individual words accurately when they are spoken by native speakers. The course consists of a newly devised programme to overcome these problems and provides the student with an introduction to phonetics, regular spelling rules and the problems deriving from a word’s etymology.

World Civilisation to 1648

The module offers a survey and comparison of major civilizations from antiquity to the early modern age, a period of roughly 5,000 years. The study is limited to key features and developments in significant human communities that flourished at different times in various regions of the world. It requires students to think like historians. The study of history is the study of human perceptions, ideas and activities. The object of historical study is to increase understanding of the variation, capability and potential of human thought and behaviour. The study is designed to teach students to use historical evidence to develop and support reasoned interpretations and opinions.

Interpersonal Skills and Client Service

Work-life generally, and in the services field particularly, revolves around being able to communicate with people effectively. Balancing work and home, time management, team skills, customer service, career management, and effective leadership skills are just some of the areas where students need guidance before entering the workplace. The interpersonal skills module aims to develop students’ capability in managing psychological and behavioural interaction with people with a view to promoting work efficiency and a co-operative working environment

This module provides an understanding of fundamental accounting theories/concepts underlying accounting procedures. ENG 210

English III: Speech with Communication Technology

This module focuses on students’ listening and speaking skills. It emphasises the structured preparation (language and format) of spoken presentations and careful listening and response through critique of others’ formal presentations. Students are required to undertake group self-study to develop skills in visual and aural ICT support for their presentations (deliberated formatting of Powerpoint, incorporation of video-clips, photographs and printed texts such as extracts from newspapers and magazines etc).

This module teaches and leads students to practise the major modes of discourse. It also requires students to use appropriate procedures to prepare a research paper, including the use of relevant discourse modes.

English for Academic Purposes

This elective module is particularly intended for students wishing to prepare
themselves for further study through the medium of English, especially in overseas venues. It seeks to take students with a solid foundation in English through the study of English I-IV and prepares them to reach an IELTS equivalent level of 5.0-5.5 or beyond in the four language skills. The units also teach students to apply these language capacities effectively in the real academic contexts of their current program

Introduction to World Religions

This module provides an introduction to the major religious traditions of the world,including the various Indian, Chinese, Buddhist and Islamic traditions. It sets these religions in their historical context, presents aspects of religious thought enshrined in the relevant religious texts and examines these as spiritual responses to the human condition.

PHY 140

Physical Concepts

Physical Concepts is an introductory course in physics intended for students not majoring in a science field. The approach is primarily conceptual with sufficient simple mathematics included to illustrate the quantitative side of physics. The main applications are to the physics in the everyday world with attention also given to the historical development of both classical and modern physics.

World Regional Geography

The module introduces students to the nature and function of geographical knowledge in the context of increasing globalisation. It looks at the consequences of converging systems across the globe, identifies the factors which create, maintain and destroy diversity and stresses the exceptional impact of the phenomenon of globalisation. It also provides students with a solid basic understanding of the geographically associated aspects of the major regions of the world.

This module introduces students to the basic understanding of the Hong Kong Legal System including the origins of the law, the common law system and the court system. The course will also provide a comparative overview of the Common Law System and the PRC Legal System.

The module introduces students to a range of literary genres, encompassing fable, parable, tale, short story, poetry and drama. Introduction to Theology

This course offers a critical overview of central themes and questions in Christian theology with emphasis on Catholic traditions, especially where these are held in common with mainstream Christian churches. Basic sources and issues are introduced through lectures, readings, video presentations, discussions and written assignments. Central to the study will be an appreciation of the Bible as both source and product of reflection upon God and God’s relationship with humankind

Logic

This is an introductory consideration of logical theory: definitions, propositions and reasoning. Students are taught both the methods used in logical analysis and the reasons behind them. The emphasis is upon dealing with arguments as they are expressed in everyday language.

作為中國的一個主要城市,香港學生必須能聽、能說普通話,才能應付未來就業 的挑戰。 學院要求每位學生都有一定的普通話溝通能力,學生在入學時,須接 受一個普通話評核試。學院將根據評核試的成績,編排學生至不同普通話班級。 副學士課程完結後,學生須完成一項普通話基本能力測試,合格者才可畢業 / 升學。

Decision-making and Effective Leadership Skills

Professional work contexts involve a variety of issues and problems where the professionals are required to make decisions and display effective leadership skills. Some decisions can be made for the individual’s own operations, others may affect a whole team, involving consensus-seeking and leadership skills. The course introduces students to the process of decision-making and the use of logical argument. It also looks at the leadership skills and the role of the leader in balancing needs and interests of team members and securing co-operation, highlighting the planning role of leaders, particularly in changing or unsettled environments.

Team-building and Co-operation

Team building and co-operation are integral to both work and life generally. It is important to learn how to maximize the productivity and effectiveness of people of varied attributes (culture, beliefs, socio-economic background, nationality, race, gender etc) when they work together in teams. The module aims to introduce the concepts of effective team-work and how to co-operate to achieve a common goal. It also incorporates contextual aspects through the involvement of current professionals from industry in the lecture programme and through accompanied visits to industry sites.

This module introduces students to the nature of contracts with a particular focus on the formation and operation of a business contract. Vitiating factors affecting the contract will also be covered.

Financial Accounting III

This module, the second part of the Intermediate Financial Accounting series, builds upon the study of financial accounting begun in Principles of Financial Accounting I. It provides an in-depth coverage of short-term and long-term liabilities, ownership equity, income tax allocation, leases and pensions. The coverage of these topics aims at helping students develop professional competence in financial accounting. Students are expected to focus on specific technical issues and integrate the pieces into a conceptual framework. Theory and policy are integrated in the presentation of these topics.

Principles of Finance

Principles of Finance is an introductory course into the world of finance. It assumes the student has a basic understanding of the principles of accounting and mathematics. The course is designed for all business students, but it will also prepare students for advanced courses in finance. A heavy emphasis will be placed on practical applications of the concepts using frequent examples from the real world of business and finance.

Auditing

Auditing does not take place in a vacuum, but rather in a complex economic and institutional environment. This module is designed to provide an understanding of the basics of audit theory and practice, with emphasis on the basic principles, concepts and methods of auditing. Evaluation of audit evidence to support a professional opinion on financial statements, generally accepted auditing standards and other topics will be covered in order to develop this understanding.
